Mill Hill, Longforgen

Project Location:
Mill Hill, Longforgen
Client Name:
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN)
Project Description:
OCU was engaged to deliver an upgrade to the electrical infrastructure at Mill Hill, Longforgan. This included installing new 11kV wood poles, overhead switchgear, and a third wire to supply a new 200kVA transformer. Our teams carried out detailed site assessments and created an outage plan to minimise disruption. The project formed part of a new connection request from an SSEN customer, requiring a three-phase supply and transformer upgrade, to support the installation of new solar and ground source heat pumps.
Key Stats:
Full access agreements secured
Site-specific RAMS collated
5-day outage plan developed
5 Days
Duration
Challenge
Multiple landowners were identified during the access stage, which extended the time required to secure permissions.
Two sections of the works presented challenging access conditions, requiring additional resources to complete the works safely.
Access issues posed a risk to completing the project within the approved 5-day outage plan.
Solution
Carried out a site meeting with both the landowners and SSEN
Discussed the areas that required additional work for safe access
Provided a marked plan identifying tree-cutting areas from access points to poles
Final plan carefully developed, balancing SSEN’s customer requirements and compliance with Scottish Woodlands regulations
Outcome
Despite access challenges and tight planning parameters, the project was successfully delivered within the approved 5-day outage window
The replacement of 13 existing poles with upgraded 11kV wooden poles significantly improved the structural reliability and future resilience of the overhead line network
Installing 1.6km of high-performance conductor increased the line’s capacity to accommodate the new transformer and low-carbon technologies
