OCU Group’s custom-built pipe-pushing machine, George, is playing a key role in United Utilities’ £260 million Vyrnwy Aqueduct Modernisation Programme (VAMP), helping to overcome complex engineering challenges while reducing disruption to local communities.

The historic aqueduct supplies water to around one million people across Merseyside and Cheshire, with modernisation work continuing until 2028 to maintain water quality and reliable supplies for future generations.

Named after George Deacon, the engineer who designed the Victorian aqueduct, George was developed by OCU in collaboration with specialist trenchless equipment manufacturers. Weighing approximately 200 tonnes, it is the UK’s largest and most powerful pipe pusher, capable of installing polyethylene (PE) pipe inside existing pipelines over distances of up to 2km.

The specialist equipment is supporting the latest phase of the programme, which involves

installing new 900mm PE pipework inside the original 19th century cast-iron pipelines.

By enabling longer sections of pipe to be installed with fewer excavations, George is helping improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact and minimise disruption to local communities.

As principal contractor working with United Utilities, OCU is delivering the upgrades while the aqueduct remains operational, helping to maintain reliable water supplies throughout construction. The programme demonstrates how specialist equipment and engineering expertise can support efficient delivery while extending the life of critical infrastructure.

Marc Reynolds, Regional Director - North & Wales at OCU Group, said: “George is a practical example of how investment in specialist equipment, combined with the expertise of our teams, can help overcome complex engineering challenges. Installing longer sections of pipe with fewer excavations allows us to work more efficiently while reducing disruption for local communities and the impact on the surrounding environment.
“We’re proud to be working with United Utilities to modernise this important asset, helping ensure it continues to provide reliable, high-quality water supplies for generations to come.”
