Supporting biodiversity through volunteering at Lower Moor Farm Nature Reserve

Volunteers from OCU Group and SSEN recently came together for a rewarding day at Lower Moor Farm Nature Reserve, managed by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.
The team supported conservation efforts by clearing and maintaining the apiary area, helping protect pollinators and the vital role they play in sustaining biodiversity. Pollinators are essential to healthy ecosystems, and maintaining habitats like this supports a wide range of wildlife across the reserve.
Lower Moor Farm Nature Reserve is a remarkable wetland site, made up of lakes, reedbeds, grasslands and wildflower-rich habitats. It supports an incredible variety of species and plays an important role in local conservation efforts, highlighting the value of community action and partnership in protecting the natural environment.
The day was a strong example of collaboration between OCU, SSEN and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, bringing people together from different organisations to deliver tangible environmental benefits.

Alina Mone, Senior Environmental & Sustainability Advisor at OCU Group, said:
"Bringing together volunteers from OCU Group and SSEN to support such an important site has been incredibly rewarding. Organising volunteering days at places like Lower Moor allows us to give something tangible back to nature, support biodiversity, and strengthen partnerships at the same time. It’s inspiring to see people step away from their day-to-day roles and work together for a shared goal."
The day also demonstrated the value of cross-industry collaboration. Carl Pates, Project Director at SSEN, commented:
"Spending the day at Lower Moor alongside colleagues and OCU Group volunteers was a great reminder of the impact we can make when we work together. Getting hands-on at the reserve, supporting pollinators and local biodiversity, really brought our sustainability commitments to life. It was a brilliant day, and I’m proud to see our teams contributing directly to protecting such an important natural environment."

From the perspective of the reserve, Georgia Robins, Lakeside Care Farm Manager & Site Co-ordinator at Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, added:
"It was fantastic to welcome volunteers from OCU Group and SSEN to Lower Moor. The support they gave in clearing and maintaining the apiary area makes a real difference to our work and to the pollinators that rely on this habitat. Days like this show how valuable partnerships are in helping us care for such a special reserve."
Volunteering initiatives like this reflect OCU’s commitment to environmental stewardship, collaboration, our people, and giving back to the communities and landscapes where we work.
